Process of accession to the World Trade Organization reported

14.05.2025

On May 14, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed Uzbekistan's accession to the World Trade Organization and measures to accelerate the process.

This process has been under special control of the Head of State since 2023. Over this period, Uzbekistan has achieved concrete results in multilateral and bilateral negotiations.

In particular, four meetings of the Working Group have been held, where more than 500 issues have been considered. In order to intensify the process, systemic reforms in the spheres are being implemented.

Within the framework of the bilateral track, negotiations were held with 33 countries on market access issues, out of which negotiations were successfully completed with 24 countries.

WTO members positively assess the new approach and results of reforms in Uzbekistan, confirming the country's firm commitment to openness, transparency and fair trade.

Large-scale legal and institutional reforms are being implemented as part of bringing the national legislation in line with the requirements of the organization. In particular, 13 laws, 10 decrees and resolutions of the President, 19 resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers and 10 interagency legal acts have been adopted.

Procedures in the areas of customs regulation, export-import operations and intellectual property have been gradually harmonized. The exclusive rights of six enterprises with state participation were cancelled.

During the meeting, the Head of State gave specific instructions to accelerate and systematically organize the process of accession to the WTO.

In particular, by the end of this year it is necessary to finalize bilateral negotiations with the remaining 9 countries, hold two more meetings of the Working Group and finalize the draft final report of the Working Group, thus consolidating Uzbekistan's international commitments within the framework of the WTO.

The need to speed up the adoption of about 15 legal acts, including the development of new versions of the laws “On quality and safety of food products”, “On protective measures, anti-dumping and countervailing duties” in close and effective cooperation with the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis was also pointed out.

The importance of reforms in technical regulation, sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary spheres, as well as improving the quality of training in these areas was emphasized.
