Living in an independent country, in an atmosphere of freedom and tranquility, we gratefully remember those who dreamed of these days and fought for them. Their sacrifices were not in vain: their memory is preserved in the hearts of the people and will be forever honored by future generations. This truth is symbolized by the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Repression, which is traditionally observed on the eve of Independence Day.
On August 29, a solemn ceremony was held in the "Shahidlar xotirasi" alley, attended by representatives of state and public organizations, intellectuals, and veterans.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in the ceremony.
Suras from the Quran were read in memory of the devoted sons of the Motherland. Memorial plov was served.
At the symbolic grave, a conversation took place with scientists and public figures about the importance of studying history and educating young people in the spirit of respect for peace and independence.
- Every year on the eve of Independence Day, we offer prayers in memory of our ancestors who gave their lives for the freedom of the Motherland. Their courage and feat will always be an example for us, - noted the Head of State.
History preserves heavy pages: during the years of repression, more than 100 thousand innocent compatriots were subjected to persecution. Thousands were executed on unjust charges, and many were exiled, leaving behind widows and orphans. Almost a century has passed, but the memories of these tragic events still echo with pain in the hearts of the people. These lessons further inspire us to cherish today’s freedom and strengthen independence.
The President emphasized that much has been done in recent years to honor the memory of our ancestors. More than 1,2 thousand names of the repressed have been rehabilitated, the Museum of the Memory of Victims of Repression has been reconstructed and supplemented with thousands of new documents, and similar museums are being established in the regions. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahmudkhoja Behbudi, the leader of the Jadid movement, and a State Museum of Jadid Heritage is being established in Bukhara.
- It is important to convey “living” history to the people, especially to the youth. Since last year, the first week of October has been observed as the Week of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions. This year, it is being held in the format of a Week of Remembrance and Education. It is necessary to fill it with deep content and make it accessible to everyone: to hold special lessons in schools and universities, television programs, and youth contests. The younger generation must be brought up with an understanding of how precious independence is and what strong personalities our ancestors were. Spiritually strong youth set great goals, study diligently, and develop harmoniously, – noted Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The importance of studying the lives of outstanding enlighteners, was separately emphasized. The Jadids were innovators in many fields: they created the first Uzbek novels, theatrical and cinematic works, and textbooks on various subjects. If the Turkestan students who studied in Germany in the 1920s had not become victims of repression, they could have transformed society. It is important that the youth know and take pride in precisely these examples.
Such a spiritual foundation is a pillar of national unity and stability. Today, when threats to the independence of states are increasing around the world, this is especially relevant. All this requires from us solidarity, vigilance, and the consistent continuation of reforms.
Fortunately, peace and tranquility prevail in Uzbekistan, and people look to the future with confidence. This is our greatest wealth.
At the conclusion of the event, a dua was recited with a prayer that peace, harmony, and prosperity in our country always remain strong and enduring.
